What You Can and Cannot Claim
The ATO has specific rules for the fitness and sporting industry, and they trip a lot of people up. Here is the short version. For the detail, see the ATO fitness industry deductions guide, or work with an agent who does this every day.

Got a question? We've got answers.
Do I need an accountant if I am a personal trainer on an ABN?
Holding an ABN does not automatically make you a contractor, and it does not settle how your income and deductions are treated. The rules get complex once you mix employee pay, ABN income, and personal spending. A registered agent makes sure you claim everything you are entitled to, report income in the right place, and lodge correctly.
What can personal trainers and fitness instructors claim on tax?
Common claims include work-related equipment, certifications tied to your current role, industry registration such as FITREC, public liability insurance, and the work share of your phone, internet, and car travel between jobs. Everyday activewear and your own gym membership generally are not deductible.
I work at a gym and also take private clients. How does that work?
This is one of the most common setups we see, and it is where records tend to break down. You may be an employee for the gym shifts and a sole trader for your private clients at the same time. We separate the two income streams, apply the right deductions to each, and lodge one clean return.
Do I have to register for GST as a personal trainer?
You must register for GST once your turnover reaches $75,000 in a 12-month period. Below that it is optional. We can check where you sit, handle the registration if you need it, and take care of your BAS.
Can you do my tax return over the phone?
Yes. That is how most of our clients work with us. Pick a time, including evenings and weekends, and we will walk through your return live on a call, then lodge it once you eSign. No office visit required.
I run a gym, not just personal training. Can you still help?
Yes. We support full fitness businesses with company and trust setup, bookkeeping and BAS, and payroll for your staff, all from registered Australian tax agents with fixed pricing.
