Hiring a Bookkeeper?
Hire the Outcome Instead.
What your job ad really costs
You didn't want a bookkeeper. You wanted the books done.
Hire, temp, offshore staffing, or fractional. Here's the honest comparison.
| Options | Hire in-house | Agency temp | Offshore staffing firm | Fractional Tax + Books™ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time to start | 6–8 weeks | 1–2 weeks | 3–4 weeks | Within 5 business days |
| Cost basis | Salary + 12% super + leave + recruitment | Hourly + 20–35% margin | Monthly per seat, you supervise | One fixed monthly fee, quoted against your ad |
| Who checks the work | You, or your accountant by the hour | You | You | Your Australian registered tax agent |
| BAS and tax return | Separate accountant, separate bill | Separate | Separate | Included, lodged by us |
| Sick, on leave, resigns | Books stop; back on SEEK | Agency re-fills, you re-train | Replacement, you re-train | Team-backed; your tax agent keeps continuity |
| If it goes wrong | Your problem | Your problem | Your problem | Four written guarantees; we pay ATO fines we cause |
| Lock-in | Fair Work, notice, redundancy | Usually none | Often 6–12 months | 90 days, then leave on 60 days' notice |

What does the bookkeeper you're advertising for really cost?
Part-time? Enter the pro-rata amount you're offering. Bookkeepers in Australia are advertised at $75,000–$90,000 full-time (SEEK).
What you pay now for BAS review, the tax return and questions. Leave it if you're not sure — $3,000–$6,000 is typical.
Year-one cost of the hire
That's about $8,125 a month — of which roughly $12,000 a year is paid annual leave, sick leave and public holidays.
Everything the hire would do — plus everything the hire couldn't.

Frequently asked questions
What does “fractional” actually mean here?
You get the fraction of a bookkeeper’s week your business actually needs — one day, three days, or full-time-equivalent — plus a fraction of a registered tax agent you would never hire full-time. Both on one fixed monthly fee, scoped against the role you’re advertising. You stop paying for a 38-hour week when the work is 20 hours, and you stop paying an outside accountant to check it.
Where is my bookkeeper based?
Your dedicated bookkeeper is part of our supervised offshore team, trained on Xero and Australian GST, BAS, payroll and Single Touch Payroll, working your business hours on your file only. Your registered tax agent is in Australia, reviews the work every month, lodges everything, and is accountable to you and to the Tax Practitioners Board. That combination is how the fee is what it is, and it’s why we back it with four written guarantees.
How is my data kept secure?
Work is done inside your Xero file and your systems using named, role-limited logins with two-factor authentication — nothing is downloaded to personal devices. Access is granted by you and can be revoked by you at any time. Your registered tax agent is bound by the TPB Code of Professional Conduct and Australian privacy law. Ask us for the security summary on your Fit Call; it’s a one-pager.
We really need someone physically in the office. Can you help?
Sometimes a business needs a person at the front desk, and we’ll say so if that’s you. Often, though, the role in the ad is 60% bookkeeping and 40% admin. We take the bookkeeping, and you hire a lighter, cheaper admin role — or none at all. Bring the ad to the call and we’ll tell you honestly which it is.
Can I keep my existing accountant?
Yes. We’ll do the books and hand over clean files at year-end. Most clients find that once the bookkeeper and the tax agent sit on the same team, the two-invoice, two-people-blaming-each-other problem disappears, and they consolidate. But it’s your call, not a condition.
How fast can you actually start?
Within five business days of a signed engagement, we’re live on your file: system access, Xero migration if needed, bank feeds connected, handover from whoever did the books last. Because we onboard a maximum of 40 new clients a month, that timeline holds. If you need us to start before a BAS deadline, say so on the call and we’ll confirm it in writing.
What happens to the backlog the last bookkeeper left?
It’s the thing we’re best at. Whatever state the file is in, our rescue team gets it clean and current within 30 days of onboarding, and up to 10 hours of that catch-up work is free. If the backlog is bigger than that, we quote the rest up front at $99/hr before we start — no surprises.
How much does it cost?
It depends on your transaction volume, payroll headcount and number of entities, which is why we price it against your ad rather than publish a menu. On the Fit Call we scope the role and give you a fixed monthly fee in writing within 24 hours, including BAS lodgement, the tax return and all four guarantees. The fee is capped, never changes mid-year, and never rises while you stay a client.
What if I hire someone later anyway?
Then you’ll hand them the cleanest file they’ve ever inherited. There’s no long-term lock-in: after a 90-day minimum, leave any time on 60 days’ notice, take your Xero file with you, and anything paid beyond your end date is refunded pro-rata. Plenty of clients keep the tax agent side and bring the bookkeeping in-house when they’re big enough. That’s a good problem to have.
How does the “we pay the fine” promise actually work?
If a lodgement that’s in our control is filed late, we pay the ATO’s late-lodgement penalty. “In our control” means we hold the records and authority needed to lodge on time and have received your approval to lodge. The exact definition is spelled out plainly in your engagement letter. Give us what we need and approve on time, and a late lodgement becomes our financial problem, not yours.
